Rumor kept her thoughts all on Travis and how she worried about him on occasion. He didn’t look like himself, he didn’t smell like himself, and it was obvious he hadn’t been himself. When Zeus placed his Lincoln Navigator in park, he helped his family out of the SUV and old Solomon held open the front door to the facility where Annette had been held. Rumor shielded her eyes from the sun when she scaled the tall gray brick building, with vines that grew up the face of it from the perfectly groomed lawns around its feet. Never had she thought her friend would end up in a place like that, but a nosy neighbor reported screaming, and the police had to alert Rumor of what had been happening.
Apparently there had been screaming, glass breaking, and the neighbor believed it had been a domestic dispute gone wrong. Upon their arrival the police found frightened Annette in her upstairs hall closet, clenching a butcher’s knife in her hand. She’d been sitting in excrement, shaking and mumbling things to herself. One officer tried to help her out of the closet, but she swung her knife at him and went wind-milling through the house and out of the front door. They had to sedate her in order to take her in for questioning, and have a proper health inspection performed on her to see if she had been harmed. A few of the other officers that had arrived on the scene had already guessed that someone, or something, terrorized this poor woman until she couldn’t speak, couldn’t think on her own, and didn’t want to move at all. There had been no proof as to who, or what it was, but her very own husband broke down at the police station during an interview and was immediately dismissed as being a suspect.
Now Annette sat in a rocking chair, staring out at the rolling pastures behind the facility, not hearing, nor caring, or responding to what anyone had to say. All she did was give a little rock in her chair every now and again, or go screaming when someone touched her. Rumor had been begging Travis to see her, thinking that would help something, but he’d been too consumed with his liquor to hear a word she’d been saying. Maybe he was too ashamed to see his own damage at play for leaving his defenseless wife all alone for something to happen to her.
Inside the facility, Rumor tried her best to ignore all of the people who would walk past with beaming and bright smiles on their faces— product of their medications in effect— while some had not been as cheery. Some would talk to themselves, or even offer to help her get to a better place. Through the wide hallways of Timberlawn Mental Institution they went with their nostrils stinging from bleach and ammonia, meaning that someone must’ve had an accident somewhere in the building, just to get to Annette’s room.
